Level Analysis of Tomb Raider(2013)

Tomb Raider (2013) is an action-adventure video game, and exploration is the main gameplay element in Tomb Raider. The core mechanics of this game are running and attacking. As for the level analysis, I decided to discuss the second secret tomb of this game, the Hall of Ascension. Lara acquires the Firestarter and Rope Arrows, but only requires the latter to reach the entrance of this tomb.

The Hall of Ascension is the most straightforward of the hidden tombs. It’s on your way to the top of the mountain village, the lower route leads to Jessop, while this upper route leads to this windy tomb. Therefore, you just need turn left, then you can start to explore this secret tomb.

Gating:
  • Puzzles.
  • Gear.
  • Wind
  • Window
In this room, the player needs a while to figure the puzzle out. Luckily, you can press button O, and you will know what do you need to solve this puzzle. Basically, the puzzle is timing the shutters and timing Lara's cranking to make sure the wooden platform will "catch" the wind just after Lara clambers onto the raised ground to access the moving platform.
After you close the shutters using the crank, run to the movable platform's crank (the one pictured above) and wait for the windows to open and the wind will push the lift.
Once the wind is pushing the lift, jump at the wall and you need grab ahold of the ledge. After that, you can slide to the left of the ledge until you can get the next platform.

          Positive Feedback:
  1. Spectacular
  2. Achievement
  3. Suitable time

Negative Feedback:
  1. Confuse
  2. Dark environment
Ultimately, from my perspective, this secret tomb is very successful. I think it’s better to show the more fantastic world, elaborate puzzles, and less combat. In this scene, there's nothing particularly traumatic about it, and this game becomes about gentle exploration. Instead of running, we can truly stop in somewhere for a while and enjoy something spectacular.
